Golf Portknockie is set between two
challenging and different traditional Scottish links golf
courses - two miles to the east is Cullen Golf Club - course may
be short on yardage but it requires pin-point accuracy and good
club selection to not spoil your score card - three miles west
is Strathlene Golf Club - more length but with undulating
fairways, not too large greens and a host of other hazards
serves to provide a different challenge altogether. Not too
far afield (actually all within a 45 minute car drive) there are
around fifteen golf courses - links and inland - flat and/or
slopes - all with different challenges and variety of terrain
and scenery- to choose to visit and play. This is truly an
area all golfers should try at least once. There being so many
golf courses to choose from in the area tee times are rarely
congested and green fees are reasonably priced . Packages can
be arranged upon request - including groups of up to 8
(dependent on room availability).
Walking This area is a popular destination
for both keen and ‘social’ walkers. Portknockie is the starting
point or en route to several local walking routes (cliff top,
coastal and inland). The village has 6 ‘designated’ local
walking routes which have been chosen to enable visitors to
enjoy the spectacular views in and around the village. For
more challenging walks and different terrain the Cairngorm
Mountains are a short car drive inland or there are some forest
and woodland walks close by.
Malt Whisky Trail The world famous Malt
Whisky Trail starts just up the road. Glenglassaugh Distillery
is an iconic single malt Scotch whisky distillery located just
beyond the boundary of the Speyside region in the north-east of
Scotland, close to the small town of Portsoy and picturesquely
sited high above the dramatic Sandend Bay. Local barley and
good supplies of pure water ensure that whisky of the
highest quality is made here. The
River Spey flows into the Moray Firth at Spey Bay, about 8 miles
west along the coast from Portknockie, after being fed by the
precipitation from the Cairngorm Mountains and surrounding area.
Follow the River Spey, by road, inland and watch out for the
Malt Whisky Trail signs which direct you to a fantastic
selection of whisky distilleries which have visitor centres and
guided tours - by the time you’ve visited a few you will become
quite an expert on the Scottish National ‘dram’.
Shopping Whilst the village of Portknockie
is too small to sustain any of the major High Street chain
stores you do not have to travel too far to top up on retail
therapy. Inverness and Aberdeen are the two major cities of the
North and North East of Scotland and are around the same
distance from Portknockie (each around an hour and a half drive
at an easy pace on good roads with marvellous scenery) They both
have excellent Shopping Centres as well as a great deal of other
things and places to do and see. Closer by, Buckie (4 miles
west) has a good selection of shops, banks and facilities. A
little further on lies the historic City of Elgin, which has a
small shopping centre and a very good selection of well known
High Street stores and smaller local.
